Exploring Arittapatti - Tamil Nadu's Biodiversity Haven

In the heart of Tamil Nadu lies Arittapatti village, a hidden gem boasting ecological wonders and historical treasures. We had the privilege of visiting this biodiversity heritage site on today accompanied by a team of experts, including Dr. D Guruswamy Dabbala (DFO), Manasir Haleema (Deputy Director, TNFWCCB), and other knowledgeable individuals from Tamil Nadu forest department along with fellow officer trainees from CASFOS Burnihat.

Arittapatti biodiversity heritage site  unfolds as a 193.43-hectare expanse, comprising 139.63 hectares in Arittapatti village and 53.8 hectares in Meenakshipuram village. DFO Sir, a seasoned expert, shared the site's rich ecological tapestry – home to 250 bird species, including Laggar Falcon and Bonelli’s Eagle, and diverse wildlife like the Indian Pangolin and Slender Loris.

Beyond its biodiversity, Arittapatti serves as a vital watershed, replenishing 72 lakes, 200 natural springs, and three check dams. The landscape is adorned with megalithic structures, rock-cut temples, and Tamil Brahmi inscriptions, echoing its historical significance.

However, the journey revealed challenges faced by the forest department. Poaching, granite quarrying threats, tourism impact, plastic and solid waste issues, and grazing pressures pose imminent risks. Despite these challenges, the State government, on the recommendation of the Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Board, declared Arittapatti a biodiversity heritage site under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, Section 37.

The site's historical charm, once a thriving Jain center, attracts educational tourism and film industry interest. Conservation efforts, including community development and medicinal plant preservation, are underway. As we left Arittapatti, the commitment to preserving its ecological and cultural heritage lingered, urging a collective responsibility in safeguarding Tamil Nadu's natural wonders.
